SHOCK! 10 Ways to Impress Your Boss |
|
Written by Diana Bocco

10 Ways to Impress Your Boss By Diana Bocco Whether you’re new to a job or hoping to get up the corporate ladder, here are some ways to get noticed. Show rather than tell. Whether you’re delivering good or bad news about a situation, show up with the numbers and results in black and white, says Dianna Booher, CEO of Booher Consultants. If you’re the bearer of bad news, this tactic distances you from the situation. If you’re sharing good news, it shows you did your homework. Meet deadlines. This is an easy one. If you commit to doing something by a certain date, do it. Even if it means giving up having a life for a couple of days. Wait to ask for more. We know you want a raise. Earn it. Show up to the next employee review with a folder showcasing your achievements over the previous six months. Or make sure you toot your own horn (this is not the same as bragging!) so the boss hears about it. Keep asking yourself two questions: If asked right now, do I know what are the key contributions I’ve made to the company that I can highlight? And what value do I add to the organization through my work? If you can’t answer those questions, chances are your boss can’t either. Dress up. You may not need a suit, but wearing a torn-up shirt to the office while everybody else is wearing button-down shirts will eventually play against you. Don’t use the office as a social outlet. Forget about dating co-workers or gossiping around the coffee machine. And by all means avoid useless social arguments with the people around you. When things get though, don’t bail out. Delegating responsibilities at the wrong time can make you look weak or show lack of leadership. You want your boss to think you can handle anything. Ask to do more. Rather than waiting to be offered a higher position, show that you can take on more and deliver. Learn manners. Chances are you will have to socialize with your boss at some point. When the time comes, make sure you’re likable. That means no gossiping, no rude jokes and no loud displays of public drunkenness. Reading the newspaper once in a while to know what’s going on in the world around you will also give you something intelligent to talk about. Learn what makes your boss tick. Odds are much higher you will get what you want if your boss is on your side. |

Getting to work on time will help you get a raise ....And seven other things that will get you a promotion.... By Diana Bocco 1) Find something that is not working and come up with a creative solution that will mean more money or time or productivity for the company. 2)Stay that extra hour after work if things get tough and papers need to be finished. 3)Start a saving account. Employees with a nice financial cushion can afford to push harder in pay-raise negotiations. 4)Stop complaining out loud. Nobody likes a whiner. 5)Keep an accomplishment log highlighting what you’ve accomplished in the past, as well as goals that can be accomplished in the future. 6)Stay away from questionable websites during work hours. Better off, cut your surfing time to a minimum. 7)Refill the photocopier's paper tray and replace the roll of toilet paper in the office’s bathroom. Your co-workers will like you and word will spread. |
